The Whanganui River valley is steeped in the history of people, geology and ecology. This ride is the perfect way to get in touch with the highlights.
This is a perfect trip all year round, especially magical in Autumn and Winter
Your local guide will whisk you to the top of the Valley or drop at any point that you're comfortable with, so you can meander down discovering everything along the way.
Rich in history and culture, you will learn about the local Iwi (tribe), Te Awa Tupua – their River of Sacred Power and why the river was vitally important for transport, food and spiritual wellbeing for local Māori. Hear stories of the early settlers and the paddle steamers that plied the river, deep into the interior of the Whanganui.
The final leg from Upokongaro can be navigated into the city either on the new dedicated cycle path that is part of Mountains to Sea. Alternatively on selected days, board the Wairua to experience the past on one of the original paddle steamers. Pick up your bike again and head for a fitting finale at Castlecliff (where there is a beach and cafe awaiting)
