Our ethos is all about making your journey in the area happen.  We offer bike hire, luggage transport, shuttles and local knowledge.  If one of our existing packages doesn't fit what you're looking for, then use our services below to construct what you need.  If there is another idea you have, just ask us, one of our local partners may be able to help us deliver it for you.

4 Days & 3 Nights

This Mountain bike package is designed for all year round, you will not have to carry luggage, food, bedding. Transfers are organised making your ride easy and enjoyable.  Whanganui Tours will be there to support you to the end.

Trail Description

1. Ohakune Mountain Road

Freewheel down Mt Ruapehu on one of New Zealand’s most spectacular roads.  This exhilarating 1000m descent is a fantastic way to kick start your Mountains to Sea Adventure. Take in the weird and wonderful landscape of world Heritage listed Tongariro National Park.

2. Ohakune Old Coach Road

Revealed along the way are many surprising and memorable sights – from abandoned railway tunnels and grand viaducts to old bush camps and remnants of the original cobblestone road.

3. Raetihi to Pipiriki

This is an easy 27 km ride mostly downhill on a sealed road, picturesque and peaceful, hear the birds whistling as you approach Pipiriki situated on the Whanganui River.

4. Whanganui River Road

Following the Whanganui River as it flows towards the sea, this peaceful road blends sublime scenery with a series of delightful heritage sites, both Māori and European. Starting at Pīpīriki – gateway to Whanganui National Park – this long but leisurely ride undulates through small settlements perched high above the mighty river.
A beautiful marae, notable church and convent, charming old flour mill, and other special sights tell their stories.

5. Upokongaro - Tasman Sea

From Upokongaro village over the cycle bridge to the west side of the river, this flat and easy trail follows the river to Whanganui city limits where it continues on cycle paths,suburban streets and pretty riverside boardwalk trough the centre brimming with galleries,street art, cafes and more.

The final stretch heads through salt-tinged backstreets on its way to North Mole - Castlecliff - a moody, driftwood-strewn beach where this epic journey Ends.

Note: Mangapurua section of the trail is usually closed between the end of Queens Birthday Weekend and the start of Labour Weekend.  Alternative route solutions are available through this period.

Price

Cost per person ranges from $1348 - $1470 for a full itinerary.  Pricing will depend on accommodation, season timing and group size.


Includes all transport (shuttle, jet boat) , luggage transfers, accommodation and food as detailed in your itinerary.

What do you need for this adventure

  • Sound level of fitness (up to 6 hours per day of riding)
  • Technical mountain bike skills and experience (most of the trails are Grade 3 and are in remote areas.)
  • Mechanically sound mountain bike with knobbly tyres for the off road trails  (hire options available)
  • PLB strongly recommended for Mangapurua (we can provide this for hire)
  • Full packing list provided with itinerary
